Repair Vinyl Flooring

Bookmark and Share

Over time, the glue underneath the vinyl tile breaks down.  Not repairing can cause further tear leading to costly repairs.  Fortunately, using Devcon®home WeldIt™ and following the simple steps below, you will be able to make quick repairs on your vinyl flooring and keep it in good condition longer.

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. First, you will use a clothing iron to loosen the vinyl tile. Trying to peel the vinyl beforehand will cause further tearing.
  2. Turn on the iron and set it to medium heat.  Wait for it to heat up.
  3. Place a piece of aluminum foil over the loose tile, making sure the foil is large enough to cover the entire vinyl piece.
  4. Place the iron on the aluminum foil and apply moderate pressure for 1-2 minutes.  This will help soften the vinyl and loosen any glue underneath.
  5. Carefully try to lift the vinyl tile. It should be able to peal back easily.  If it does not, repeat step 4.
  6. Remove the iron and foil.
  7. Carefully, lift the loose end of the vinyl tile and peel back.
  8. Apply WeldIt™ to the backing on vinyl tile and the floor.
  9. Flatten out the vinyl tile and press firmly in place.
  10. With a damp tile, wipe away any excess of the WeldIt™ adhesive.
  11. Allow adhesive to fully cure for about 16-24 hours.
  12. Your repair is now complete.

  • For best results, do not allow foot traffic until the vinyl tile repair is fully cured.
  • After adding adhesive and placing the vinyl tile, place books or a heavy flat object onto the tile to keep it flat during adhesive cure time.
